About Caliche

In a world racing towards net-zero, the real challenge isn’t switching to renewables—it’s cleaning up the industries we can’t live without. Steel, cement, power, and petroleum are the backbone of modern economies and the largest carbon emitters. These sectors need transformation.

Caliche is pioneering a biological solution to industrial emissions. As India’s largest petroleum biotechnology startup, it deploys microbial carbon capture technology to help hard-to-abate industries lower their carbon footprint.

Caliche’s proprietary system captures CO₂ directly from flue gas using unique microbes like CPLPB1 and CPLPB2. These microorganisms convert emissions into biomass and specialty chemicals, which are then used in organic fertilisers, biomass fuel, fish pond ammonification, and rural energy solutions.

With an ~85% carbon capture efficiency and costs 2–4 times lower than traditional methods, Caliche stands out as one of India’s most promising clean technology innovators. Its modular, site-specific systems are already operational across India, the UAE, and Australia. Backed by 14 patents (3 granted) and partnerships with leading players like Oil India Limited, BPCL, and Rochem, Caliche is pushing the boundaries of scalable decarbonisation.

Caliche at MIF’s Scale-Up

Caliche was inducted into MIF’s Scale-Up program in February 2025 for its transformative carbon-to-chemical technology and high potential for industrial impact. Operating at the intersection of innovation and climate action, the startup is poised to redefine how industries approach emissions.

Through the Scale-Up program, MIF will offer strategic mentorship across business model refinement, go-to-market strategy, and operations scaling. As Caliche works to help industries meet their carbon reduction goals, MIF is committed to helping the company scale both its impact and reach.
