Marico Innovation Foundation at Work: Agri-Pilots, Circularity, and Global Climate Conversations
Scaling ideas, strengthening systems, and turning innovation into action across farms and climate platforms in India.
With over 1,000 applications coming in for the Indian Innovation Icons 2027, a look at the sectors and social challenges driving India's next wave of game-changing innovations.
India’s innovation story is about visible breakthroughs: a new technology, a fast-growing startup, a scientific first. It is equally about things happening on farms, classrooms, healthcare systems, in waste management, and in communities that have historically had limited access to essential services.
The 1,000+ applications received for Indian Innovation Icons 2027 offer a glimpse into a less visible side of India’s innovation landscape. The numbers reveal layers beneath the surface that showcase the sectors and challenges driving India’s economic, environmental, and social future.
Here are some things that stand out.
Among Social category applications, 51% address Access to Education, while 33% focus on Empowerment of Marginalized Communities. Other areas represented include Gender Equality (25%), Social Inclusion (24%), Healthcare Accessibility (23%) and Employment Opportunities (22%).

The spread of applications across these areas reflects the breadth of social challenges being addressed by organisations today. The data also points to the interconnected nature of these issues, with many organisations working across multiple areas at once.
Climate, Agriculture and Allied Activities account for 19% and 18% of Business applications respectively, making them the top two categories. They are followed by

Innovators are increasingly seeing climate resilience and agricultural productivity not only as challenges to be managed, but as spaces for new technologies, products and business models.
This is also an area where MIF’s own work is focused. Through our agri-tech field pilots, MIF has been working with innovators on the ground, exploring what it takes to move promising solutions from early pilots to meaningful, lasting impact.
AI is perhaps the most visible technology trend in today’s innovation conversation. Yet only 7% of Business applicants identified AI/ML/NLP as their core value proposition.
This number needs to be read carefully. The category includes organisations where AI/ML is the core proposition; it does not capture organisations in other sectors that use AI as part of their solutions. That distinction may be the more interesting story.
As AI becomes easier to integrate, the question is shifting from “Are you using AI?” to “What problem are you solving with it?” AI could increasingly become an underlying capability within solutions for healthcare, agriculture, climate, education and other sectors, rather than the innovation story by itself.
The application data gives us a sense of where innovation is happening. The next question is which of these ideas can translate into lasting impact.
As Jury Chair Amit Chandra, Chairperson of Bain Capital India and Co-founder of ATE Chandra Foundation, has said of this edition, the bar now isn’t just having a new idea. It is about convincingly showing how a solution performs, at scale and over time.
That is what the Indian Innovation Icons 2027 evaluation process will seek to uncover through independent jury deliberations and on-ground due diligence by knowledge partner Deloitte, ahead of the Grand Finale on March 4, 2027.
Since 2006, MIF’s Indian Innovation Icons platform has sought to identify “currently hidden, potentially game-changing” Indian innovations and bring them into the spotlight.
The applications offer an early glimpse of where India’s problem-solvers are looking, and the challenges they believe are ready for a new approach. The next step is to see which of those ideas can turn potential into measurable, lasting impact.
