GreenPod Labs, an agri-biotech company in India, addresses the staggering loss of 40% farm produce before it reaches consumers, equalling a yearly economic setback of over INR 1,200 crores.
Its groundbreaking innovation lies in unique sachets crafted from non-woven, gas-permeable membranes. These sachets contain natural plant-based extracts that trigger a defence mechanism within fruits and vegetables, slowing ripening and minimising microbial attacks at ambient temperatures. This extends the shelf life of produce such as chillies, capsicums, oranges, mangoes, and grapes by 40%-60%. Remarkably, this solution costs only 0.01% of the capital expenditure required for cold storage and 33% of the cost of Indian competitors, making it a game-changer in the market.
Farmers, traders, aggregators, and e-commerce platforms along the supply chain now rely on GreenPod’s sachets to ensure freshness, mitigate post-harvest losses, minimise food waste, and safeguard their income. Patented and scientifically approved by FSSAI, GreenPod Labs’ sachets offer a residue-free, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cold storage solutions.
GreenPod Labs at MIF’s Scale-Up
Since its induction into MIF’s no-equity accelerator in April 2023, GreenPod Labs has significantly optimised its manufacturing operations. Scale-Up mentors, including Marico’s Works Head, at Jalgaon, Preetam Rodrigues hand-held the startup as it scouted, vetted, and selected a new contract manufacturer for its sachets. This shift has resulted in noticeable cost reductions and operational improvements, enhancing the company’s competitiveness, efficiency, and reliability. The new manufacturing collaboration also led to a notable decrease in error rates, reflecting improved quality control measures.
Scale-Up has also supported GreenPod Labs to develop its distribution strategy to increase sales, predict demand patterns, optimise logistics costs, and facilitate industry connections with traders as well as packaging partners.
As of April 2024, GreenPod Labs continues to be a part of Scale-Up.
