Parry Agro
Led by Ram Bajekal, Parry Agro has succeeded in
two path-breaking initiatives.
Parry Agro, with its value emphasis on dignity
for people has arguably, the only completely staff-and-worker
run factory in the country, without any direct
management involvement; and
Parry Agro was the first among top grade tea companies
to buy and process tealeaf that increased their
factory output significantly. In order to grow,
Parry needed to increase the capacity utilization
in their factories. For this, they needed to increase
the quantity of tealeaf that they processed. With
the option of purchasing new tea gardens ruled
out, Parry began buying tealeaves from other gardens
(and small growers) and processing them in its
factories.
By doing so, Parry Agro successfully challenged
industry norms and mindsets and used non-traditional
methods to drive growth in a stagnant industry.
As a result, several paradigms have been challenged
both with respect to the market, as well as the
organization structure. While the market changes
have resulted in a substantial increase in output,
the changes in the organization structure has
led to increased responsibilities for the staff
while freeing up management time for value adding
work.
