Sowing the seeds of education & employment in extremist regions

Left-wing Extremists have been controlling education in certain parts of India such as Chhattisgarh to an extent that they have not allowed the state government to construct schools. AAA organises mass-mobilisation camps to create awareness, inculcate vocational skills and provide employment. With an initial reach of 20,000 youth, AAA is now collaborating with Scale-Up Program to provide skill-based training and successful placement to 2,00,000 youth.

A breath of fresh air to Rural India

The usage of traditional stoves (chulhas) in India results in health hazards such as lung cancer, tuberculosis, heart diseases, and respiratory ailments like asthma among the women who use them. Envirofit India is urging households to shift to its specially designed low-smoke biomass cook stoves. Scale-Up Program is helping Envirofit enable the adoption of biomass cookstoves on a large scale. From an initial goal of 1,20,000 cookstoves in 2014-15, Envirofit with the help of Scale-Up Program team is targeting to reach 3,25,000 households in 2014-15 and 1 million in 2015-16. This will significantly reduce the indoor pollution footprint on a large scale.

Revolutionising public sanitation in India

In rural India 59.4% have no access to basic sanitation facilities making them vulnerable to diseases. Eram Scientific introduced an innovative 'e-Toilet' – that is portable, hygienic and eco-friendly. From an initial target to install 400 toilets, ESS, with the help of Scale-Up Program, now plans to install 15,000 eToilets by 2015–16 across 6 states in India.

In India, the widespread usage of chemicals and pesticides in agriculture has resulted in serious implications not only on the environment, but also human health. By convincing farmer organisations to produce zero- pesticide foods, Safe Harvest is making affordable, safe food available for consumption. In 2013-14, Safe Harvest sold organic produce worth Rs. 1 crore. Scale-Up Program is now working with Safe Harvest to reach revenues of Rs.8crores in 2014–15, and Rs. 27crores in 2015–16. Scale-Up Program is also helping access working capital and build awareness for the ‘Zero’ Label produce in urban markets.

Creating livelihoods for rural youth

In rural India, the unemployment rate among graduates and above for the age group 15–29 years is estimated to be a staggering 36.6 per cent. To equip rural youth with employability and entrepreneurship skills, TARA Livelihood Academy (TLA) delivers age-appropriate training courses in Bundelkhand, North India. Since 2007, it has built capacities of around 18,000 people through its 25 training centres. Scale-Up Program is working with TLA to double this reach to 50,000 by 2015-16 and switch from being a non-profit incubating outfit to a for-profit entity with well laid out corporate objectives.
